Doug Erwing serves as Finial Group’s in-house counsel, bringing 29 years of legal experience with deep expertise in real estate, title insurance, and corporate law. Over the course of his career, Doug has held senior roles including Senior Underwriting Counsel at leading title insurance companies and General Counsel or Chief Legal Officer for companies ranging from startups to national homebuilders.

Doug has long been a trusted legal advisor to a wide range of clients involved in real estate management, development, and brokerage. He is also a seasoned professional mediator and arbitrator, having participated in numerous cases—primarily involving insurance and contractual disputes. In addition, Doug has owned and managed several title insurance operations and previously held a license as an escrow officer.

Before entering the legal field, Doug worked as a leadership and management consultant with the American Quality and Productivity Center, where he advised Fortune 500 companies on benchmarking, leadership development, and risk mitigation.

Doug has been an active member of the Texas Land Title Association’s Judiciary Committee, where he played a key role in drafting proposed amendments to the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) and shaping TLTA’s position on dispute resolution matters in Texas. He also served on the Board of the Midtown Development Authority for nine years.

Doug’s commitment to education includes teaching in the Honors College at the University of Houston, where he received multiple awards for his service. His courses spanned topics such as American History, Constitutional Law, the Florentine Renaissance, and civic engagement.

A native Houstonian and graduate of Bellaire High School, Doug holds a B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin, a J.D. from the University of Houston, and a Ph.D. in American Legal History from the University of Houston. He was an honors student at UT, conducted faculty-led research during law school, and was awarded a prestigious Mellon Fellowship during his doctoral studies.

Doug is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather of two, whom he enjoys chasing through parks and on family vacations—most often in Italy. He is also a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where he regularly ushers at the contemporary service.
